Lan Ha Bay Full Day Tour from Cat Ba: What to Expect (And Why Group Size Matters)

Most boat tours on Lan Ha Bay carry between 50 and 99 passengers. Ours carries 25 to 30.

That difference sounds small until you’re trying to kayak through a narrow cave entrance with 70 other people, or waiting in line for lunch on a boat that wasn’t built for that many guests. We kept our group size deliberately small — not as a marketing claim, but because it’s the only way to run the full itinerary properly and actually let people enjoy it.

Here’s exactly what a full day with Cat Ba Local looks like.

The Itinerary: 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM

We pick you up from your hotel in Cat Ba town at 8:30 AM — no need to find your way to a pier. From there, the day runs until 5:00 PM, giving us enough time to cover every stop without rushing.

Most tours on Lan Ha Bay have quietly shortened their itineraries over the past few years to accommodate larger groups and tighter logistics. We still run the complete route.

Cai Beo Floating Village

cai beo fishing village

The first stop is Cai Beo, one of the oldest fishing villages in the Gulf of Tonkin — people have lived on the water here for over 7,000 years. Our guide will explain how the village actually functions today: which families still fish full-time, how the houses are built to withstand typhoon season, what’s changing and what isn’t.

It’s a five-minute stop on most tours. We spend enough time here to make it worth the visit.

Lan Ha Bay — The Main Stretch

lan ha bay

Lan Ha Bay has over 400 islands. Ha Long Bay gets the international attention, but Lan Ha is quieter, cleaner, and — because it sits adjacent to Cat Ba National Park — every island is covered in dense jungle down to the waterline.

The big cruise ships that dominate Ha Long Bay can’t operate here. The bay is restricted to smaller boats, which is a significant part of why it still looks the way it does.

Dark and Bright Cave (Hang Tối Sáng)

dark bright cave

This is where the kayaking happens — 90 minutes paddling through a cave system where the light shifts from complete darkness to open lagoon as you move through. The cave connects two bodies of water, so you paddle in from one side and come out the other.

With a small group, this works smoothly. With 70 people, kayaks queue up at the entrance and the experience turns into something else entirely. We’ve heard this from guests who’ve done both.

Bring a waterproof phone case if you want photos inside.

Ba Trai Dao Beach

ba trai dao beach

Three small islands form a sheltered bay with a white sand beach that most visitors to the region never see. We anchor here for swimming and snorkeling. The water is clear — visibility is usually 3 to 5 meters, sometimes more depending on conditions.

This is the stop that our guides call the hidden part of the day. It doesn’t appear prominently on most tour listings, but it’s consistently the part guests mention in their reviews.

Fish Farm (Bè Cá)

fish farm

Before heading back, we stop at a traditional floating fish farm to see how local fishermen raise grouper, sea bass, and other species in net cages in the bay. It’s a short stop, but it adds context to the seafood you’ve just eaten for lunch — and to what you saw at Cai Beo in the morning.

The Food

traditional vietnamese lunch

Lunch is served on the boat between the kayaking and swimming stops, when everyone is ready to sit down.

We cook Vietnamese traditional food — not a buffet of dishes designed to feed 80 people at once, but a proper meal: fresh seafood, rice, local vegetables, and the kind of food the crew would actually eat themselves.

This is the detail that comes up most often in guest reviews, and it’s not accidental. With a group of 25 to 30, the kitchen can prepare food properly. With a larger group, most operators shift to pre-cooked, pre-portioned dishes that hold better at scale. The difference is noticeable.

What Makes This Tour Different

We’re not the cheapest option on Lan Ha Bay. At $32 per person from Cat Ba Island, we sit in the mid-range — below the luxury cruise operators, above the budget boats that cut the itinerary short.

What you’re paying for is a specific set of choices we’ve made:

Small groups (25–30 people). Every logistical decision on the tour — kayak access, beach time, lunch quality, how long we stay at each stop — is easier with fewer people. We cap at 30 because above that, the day starts to feel like crowd management.

The full itinerary, every day. We don’t skip Ba Trai Dao because it takes longer. We don’t cut the kayaking short because the cave is busy. The day runs 8:30 to 5:00 and covers every stop.

Guides who know the bay. Our guides are local — they know Lan Ha Bay specifically, not just “the Ha Long Bay area.” They know which direction the current runs through the cave, which part of Ba Trai Dao has the best snorkeling, and what the fish farm family has been doing for the past 20 years. That context changes the experience.

A Note on Booking

We run this tour daily, but with a maximum of 30 guests, dates fill faster than tours with larger boats. If you’re planning to visit Cat Ba and want to join, booking 2 to 3 days in advance is usually enough — but during peak season (June to August, and October) earlier is better.

If you’re arriving from Hanoi and need transport to Cat Ba as well, we run a combined Hanoi transfer package that takes care of both.
