Cat Ba Floating Homestay Tour — 2 Days in Lan Ha Bay

The only Cat Ba floating homestay tour that takes you from the bay to the forest — and back again. Most overnight cruises anchor you in the middle of Lan Ha Bay surrounded by 30 other boats. This is different.
Cat Ba Local runs small groups — maximum 20 people — into the quieter corners of Lan Ha Bay. Your floating homestay sits in a sheltered cove away from the tourist corridor. You eat what the locals eat, sleep where they sleep, and wake up to a bay that belongs entirely to you.
What Makes This Cat Ba Floating Homestay Tour Unique
This is the only Cat Ba tour combining five experiences in two days: a full-day cruise through Lan Ha Bay, night kayaking with bioluminescent plankton, an overnight stay on a floating homestay, cycling through Cat Ba National Park, and a home-cooked lunch in Viet Hai village. No other operator on the island offers all five in a single itinerary.
Your Cat Ba Floating Homestay Tour Begins on the Bay
Your day begins at 08:00 from Cat Ba Local’s office at 229, 1/4 Street. A short transfer takes you to the pier where you board a traditional wooden boat — your home for the next two days.
The morning is spent cruising through Lan Ha Bay’s southern channels, stopping to kayak through sea caves and hidden lagoons that larger tour boats cannot reach. In the afternoon you swim off a deserted beach, then return to the boat for dinner as the sun drops behind the limestone peaks.
After dark, you slip back into the kayak for night kayaking with bioluminescent plankton. The water here is dense with bioluminescent plankton — every paddle stroke leaves a trail of blue-green light. It is one of the rarest natural phenomena you can witness with the naked eye, and Cat Ba Local runs this portion of the tour deep inside Cat Ba National Park, away from light pollution and boat traffic.
You sleep on a floating homestay in a sheltered cove. The family who runs it has lived on the water for three generations.
Day 2: The Forest
After breakfast on the bay, the boat drops you at the pier for Viet Hai village — a small community inside Cat Ba National Park, accessible only by boat or on foot. You cycle through the forest to reach it, following trails that wind past limestone outcrops and primary jungle. The langur monkeys that live here are found nowhere else on earth.
Viet Hai is one of the few inhabited villages inside a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve. Cat Ba Biosphere Reserve was designated by UNESCO in 2004 and covers both the island’s forest and the surrounding bay — one of only a handful of reserves in Vietnam combining marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
Lunch is home-cooked by a local family in Viet Hai: fresh vegetables from their garden, fish from the bay, rice grown on the island. Then you cycle back through the park and return to Cat Ba town by late afternoon.
What’s Included in the Cat Ba Floating Homestay Tour
All meals from dinner on Day 1 through lunch on Day 2, kayak equipment, bicycle, entrance fees to Cat Ba National Park, overnight accommodation on the floating homestay, English-speaking local guide, and all boat transfers. Price from $145 per person.
Groups are capped at 20 people. Most overnight cruises on Lan Ha Bay carry 40–60 guests. The difference shows in every part of the experience — the cove you sleep in, the caves you kayak through, the meal you eat.

All meals on board (dinner on day 1, breakfast and lunch on day 2), one night accommodation in a private room on the floating house, kayaking equipment, life jackets, a local guide, and hotel pickup and drop-off in Cat Ba town are included. The price covers everything except personal drinks and tips.
Where exactly is the floating homestay located?
The homestay is anchored in Lan Ha Bay, approximately 45 minutes by boat from Cat Ba pier. The exact mooring position varies slightly by season and weather, but it is always within the sheltered bay area surrounded by limestone karsts, away from tourist boat routes.
What are the sleeping arrangements?
Guests stay in private rooms on the floating house with basic but comfortable beds, bedding, and mosquito nets. Shared bathrooms are on board. The floating house accommodates a maximum of 12 guests to keep it intimate. Rooms are not air-conditioned — the bay breeze keeps it comfortable most of the year.
Is it safe to stay overnight on a floating house in the bay?
Yes. The floating house has been operating for years in the same sheltered location. It is built on a stable platform with safety railings. Life jackets are available on board at all times. In the rare event of a storm warning, guests are brought back to Cat Ba Island immediately.
What activities are included in the 2 days?
Day 1 includes the boat journey through Lan Ha Bay, kayaking to sea caves, a visit to Cai Beo floating fishing village, sunset on the water, and dinner on the floating house. Day 2 includes a morning kayak at sunrise, breakfast, and a return cruise with additional stops before arriving back in Cat Ba town by midday.
Is there electricity and WiFi on the floating house?
There is basic electricity for lighting and phone charging. There is no WiFi — this is intentional. The floating homestay experience is designed as a digital detox. Mobile signal is weak to nonexistent in the bay.
What should I pack for the overnight stay?
Pack light: a change of clothes, swimwear, a light jacket or layers for the evening, sunscreen, insect repellent, a towel, personal toiletries, and any medication. Bring cash for drinks and tips. Leave large luggage at your hotel in Cat Ba town — storage can be arranged.
Can solo travellers book this tour?
Yes. Solo travellers are welcome. The tour runs with a minimum of 2 guests, so solo bookings may be combined with other small groups. If you prefer a private departure, contact us for pricing.
What is the cancellation policy?
Free cancellation up to 48 hours before the tour start time. Cancellations within 48 hours are non-refundable. In the event of bad weather or unsafe sea conditions, Cat Ba Local will reschedule or issue a full refund.
Is this experience available year-round?
The floating homestay runs from March through November. It is not available December through February due to cold weather and rough sea conditions in winter. The best months are April–June and September–October for calm water and mild temperatures overnight.
