How Bioluminescent Plankton Work in Cat Ba’s Lan Ha Bay
Every night in Lan Ha Bay, millions of bioluminescent plankton turn the water into something that looks like a galaxy. Dip your paddle in and trails of blue-green light follow every stroke. Splash with your hand and sparks bloom beneath the surface.
This is not a light show. It is not manufactured. It is one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on Earth — and Cat Ba Island is one of the rare places where you can experience it up close.
But how does it actually work? Why does Lan Ha Bay produce stronger bioluminescence than almost anywhere else in Vietnam? And what conditions make the glow brighter or dimmer?

ToggleWhat Are Bioluminescent Plankton?
Bioluminescent plankton are single-celled marine organisms called dinoflagellates — specifically, species like Noctiluca scintillans, which is responsible for most of the glowing water phenomena seen around the world, including in Lan Ha Bay.
They are microscopic — invisible to the naked eye during daylight. A single litre of bay water can contain hundreds of thousands of them. At night, when disturbed, each one produces a brief flash of blue-green light.
The result, when millions of them flash simultaneously in response to a moving kayak paddle, looks like liquid fire.
The Science: Why Do They Glow?
Bioluminescence in dinoflagellates is produced by a chemical reaction involving two molecules:
- Luciferin — a light-emitting compound stored inside the cell
- Luciferase — an enzyme that catalyses the reaction
When the cell is physically disturbed — by water movement, pressure, or turbulence — the luciferin and luciferase react with oxygen inside the cell, releasing energy as light rather than heat. The flash lasts only a fraction of a second, but when millions of cells flash at once, the effect is continuous and vivid.
This is the same basic chemistry used by fireflies, deep-sea fish, and certain species of jellyfish — but in dinoflagellates, the trigger is mechanical disturbance rather than a biological signal.
Why Do They Glow? The Evolutionary Purpose
Bioluminescence in plankton is widely understood as a defense mechanism — though the exact function is still debated among marine biologists. The leading theories:
- The burglar alarm hypothesis: When a small predator like a copepod disturbs the plankton, the flash attracts larger predators that eat the copepod — effectively turning the attacker into prey.
- Startling predators: The sudden flash of light may startle or disorient animals that would otherwise eat the plankton.
- Silhouette elimination: In shallow water, bioluminescence may counteract the silhouette a plankton cell casts against ambient light from above, making it harder to spot from below.
Whatever the evolutionary purpose, the effect for a human paddling through Lan Ha Bay at night is the same: every movement you make in the water triggers a cascade of light around you.
Why Lan Ha Bay Produces Stronger Bioluminescence Than Elsewhere in Vietnam
Not all coastal water in Vietnam glows. Bioluminescent plankton require specific conditions to reach the density needed for a visible display. Lan Ha Bay has all of them simultaneously — which is rare.
Warm, Sheltered Water
Dinoflagellates thrive in warm water between 20–28°C. Lan Ha Bay’s enclosed geography — surrounded by over 300 limestone islands — creates calm, sheltered conditions that retain heat and allow plankton populations to build up over time. Open coastlines flush plankton out with tidal movement. Lan Ha Bay holds them in.
Nutrient-Rich Conditions
Plankton need nutrients to reproduce — primarily nitrogen and phosphorus compounds. The bay’s ecosystem, fed by runoff from Cat Ba National Park and the natural decomposition of organic matter in its sheltered lagoons, provides a consistently nutrient-rich environment.
Minimal Light Pollution
Bioluminescence is only visible when the surrounding environment is dark. Cat Ba Island has virtually no industrial lighting along its coastline, and the limestone karsts surrounding Lan Ha Bay block ambient light from Cat Ba Town entirely. The result is near-total darkness on the water after sunset — the ideal condition for the glow to be visible.
Low Boat Traffic
Ha Long Bay, just north of Lan Ha Bay, hosts hundreds of overnight cruise ships every night. The constant diesel exhaust, chemical runoff, and physical turbulence from large vessels degrades water quality and disrupts plankton populations. Lan Ha Bay’s stricter environmental controls and lower visitor numbers mean the water remains clean enough to support high plankton density.
What Affects the Intensity of the Glow?
The bioluminescence is always present in Lan Ha Bay, but its visible intensity varies significantly depending on conditions:
Moon Phase
This is the single most important factor. On a full moon night, the ambient light from the moon is bright enough to wash out the plankton’s glow almost completely — the same way stars disappear in a lit room. The darkest nights — new moon and the days immediately surrounding it — produce the most dramatic bioluminescence. The difference between a new moon and a full moon night is substantial.
Season
Plankton populations peak during warmer months when water temperature is highest. In Lan Ha Bay, this means May through October generally produces stronger displays than the cooler winter months of December through February.
Recent Weather
Heavy rain can temporarily dilute the surface layer of the bay, reducing plankton concentration near the surface. A few days after heavy rainfall, density typically recovers. Calm, dry periods following warm weather tend to produce the best conditions.
Location on the Bay
Not all parts of Lan Ha Bay have equal plankton density. Guides who run the tour regularly learn which lagoons and sheltered coves accumulate the highest concentrations. This local knowledge — knowing where to take guests based on current conditions — makes a significant difference to the experience.
Is the Glow Visible Every Night?
Yes — but the intensity varies. On an average night during peak season with a new moon, the effect is vivid enough that guests consistently describe it as one of the most surreal experiences of their lives. On a full moon night in winter, the glow may be faint.
Cat Ba Local runs the tour year-round. On nights when conditions are likely to reduce visibility — particularly full moon periods — guides will communicate this honestly before departure.
Experience It Yourself
Understanding the science makes the experience more extraordinary, not less. Knowing that each flash of light is a living organism responding to your presence — a defense mechanism evolved over hundreds of millions of years — changes the way you see the water around your kayak.
The bioluminescent plankton tour departs daily from Cat Ba Island at 4:00 PM, combining a sunset cruise through Lan Ha Bay, swimming, a Vietnamese seafood dinner on board, and guided night kayaking through the lagoons where the water glows brightest.

What our travelers say about us
Posted on Tripadvisor Sasha AVerified Parfait ! 😌Posted on Tripadvisor CamilaVerified Suprisingly great experience We went with my partner and the experience was amazing. We were only 25 on the boat so we could talk and ask whatever we wanted and got deep into the vietnamese culture. The tour was exactly as advertised, they really avoid the crowd so you can enjoy a clear sea view. The staff (Hoan, Tom and their family) were very welcoming, Hoan explains everything with passion and love. They made us feel comfortable in every moment, the food was better than most vietnamese restaurant we went, they changed the menu because there were a lot of veggie people in the crowd. The boat is super clean. We loved it, we recommend it 100%.Posted on Tripadvisor Ane TVerified Great Experience!!! Definetly the best tour choice we made so far in Vietnam. Apart from the great scenary the most remarkable thing about the trip was our guide Tyler!! His energy was impecable, he gave us a ton of information about life and nature in the bay and answered all of our questions, not only about the bay, but about the culture in Vietnam, recommendations and a lot more!! In addition, this company booked a direct bus from our homestay in cat ba to our next destination (Nihn Bihn) with the most confortable bus. As we only were spending the day of the tour in cat ba and our homestay was a little bit far from town we wanted to stay for the rest of the afternoon in town and Tyler was the most helpful soul!! He arranged so we could leave our bags at their place, recommended places to visit and to have dinner and he then booked a taxi for us when we were done! Overall the best guide we’ve had so far! His excitement and young energy are contagious. Love from Spain, Ane and friends <3.Posted on Tripadvisor VivienneVerified Authentic fun with loads of joy and stories The tour is hosted by Ryan who is passionate and knowledgeable as a local who grew up on the water. A true down to earth experience provided by his family with his uncle driving the boat and aunt preparing a generous meal with seven different dishes. Ryan’s joy in his culture and surrounds is infectious and makes the tour and irreplaceable treatPosted on Tripadvisor Joanna kVerified A great day Although the day was slightly altered to the original itinerary, they made it work well for us. Ryan was a great tour guide and seeing the bioluminescence at the end of the day was fab.Posted on Tripadvisor HedVerified Very good day !! We had a very good time on the boat will Luu who was kind and fun ! Very beautiful day with kayaking and swimming ! We were really happy that we choose this cruise:)Posted on Tripadvisor Léa DVerified Parfait C’était vraiment très bien organisé. Vielen DankPosted on Tripadvisor Barry RVerified Unfortunate situation handled beautifully Our tour was disrupted by the weather conditions that tragically hit the Philippines just the day before. The tour operators immediately offered us a full refund, an exchange or a rescheduling to the following evening. We chose to go the following night but unfortunately again, the government didn’t allow tour boats after 18:30 or late night kayaking, but didn’t inform the tour operators until after our departure. This meant that we couldn’t continue with the kayaking as planned or see the plankton, but the operator still took us on a tour of the majestic Lan Ha bay and the floating village, AND refunded us for the whole thing. Completely out of their hands, but they handled it beautifully. Such is the gamble when touring the natural world. Communication with Cat Ba Local was quick and easy, transport from our hotel was seamless and they really tried their best to make sure we got the most out of our tour. Can’t fault Cat Ba Local one bit for unfortunately weather - just one more reason for us to come back to the wonderful Cat Ba!!
