Experience the Magic: Sunset & Night Kayaking with Glowing Plankton
Explore Tours
Night kayaking Cat Ba glowing plankton is one of the most breathtaking experiences you can have in northern Vietnam. Join Cat Ba Local for a magical sunset and night kayaking tour through the crystal waters of Lan Ha Bay, where bioluminescent plankton transforms every paddle stroke into a trail of brilliant blue-green light.
What Makes This Tour Unique
Unlike other tours that operate in crowded or light-polluted areas, our night kayaking experience takes place deep inside Cat Ba National Park — a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve. The secluded location ensures maximum plankton density and the most vivid light display possible. Every tour is limited to small groups to preserve the natural environment and ensure a personalized experience for every guest.
About the Bioluminescent Plankton
Bioluminescent plankton is one of the rarest natural phenomena you can witness with the naked eye. When you paddle through water dense with these microscopic organisms at night, every movement leaves a trail of blue-green light — your hands, your paddle, the wake behind your kayak. It looks like the sea is alive.
Bioluminescent plankton — technically marine dinoflagellates — produce light through a chemical reaction triggered by movement in the water. Lan Ha Bay’s sheltered coves and low light pollution create ideal conditions for high plankton density.
Cat Ba Local runs this tour inside Cat Ba National Park, away from the boat traffic and light pollution that kills the effect elsewhere.
What to Expect on the Tour
Your evening begins at 16:00 (16:30 in summer) when you meet your guide at the Cat Ba Local office at 229, 1/4 Street. From there, a minibus takes you to Cai Beo Harbor, where you board a traditional wooden boat.
As the boat cruises through Cai Beo Floating Village, your guide will share stories about the local families who have lived on the water for generations. At 17:30, you stop for a swim while the crew prepares dinner onboard.
As the sun sets, you paddle through calm, sheltered coves as the sky turns orange and purple. When darkness falls, the bioluminescent plankton activates — turning the water around your kayak into a living, glowing canvas.
Why Choose Cat Ba Local
Cat Ba Local is a community-based travel company founded and run by local guides who have grown up exploring Lan Ha Bay. Our guides are trained in kayaking safety, first aid, and marine ecology — and speak fluent English.

21:00 — Return to the floating platform and board the boat back to Cai Beo Harbor. 21:30 — Minibus returns to Cat Ba Town hotels. Tour ends.
Bioluminescence intensity varies by season, water temperature, and lunar cycle. The effect is strongest on moonless nights between May and October. Our guides target the highest-density zones to maximize your experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is the bioluminescent plankton experience?
Bioluminescent plankton are microscopic marine organisms that emit blue light when disturbed. When you paddle a kayak through water containing these organisms at night, every stroke of the paddle and movement of the kayak creates a visible blue glow. The effect is most intense in sheltered lagoons with still water. This tour is specifically timed and routed to maximize visibility.
Is the plankton visible every night?
Visibility depends on several factors: moon phase (darker nights are better), water temperature, salinity, and plankton bloom cycles. The effect is visible on most nights from April to October. Cat Ba Local monitors conditions and will advise if a particular night is unlikely to produce strong results. On nights with a full moon or heavy rainfall, visibility is reduced.
What does the tour include?
The 5-hour tour includes a sunset cruise through Lan Ha Bay, a swimming stop, a Vietnamese seafood dinner served on the boat, guided night kayaking through bioluminescent lagoons, and hotel pickup and drop-off within Cat Ba town. Kayak equipment and life jackets are provided.
Do I need kayaking experience?
No experience is required. Guides provide a safety briefing and basic paddling instructions before entering the lagoon. The kayaking section takes place in calm, sheltered water — suitable for complete beginners, including older adults and older children.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Children aged 6 and above can join. They can paddle in a double kayak with a parent. The tour runs until approximately 10:00–10:30 PM, so younger children may find the late finish tiring. For children under 10, parents should consider this when booking.
What time does the tour start and finish?
The tour departs at approximately 4:30–5:00 PM (depending on sunset time) and returns around 10:00–10:30 PM. Total duration is approximately 5 hours.
What is the maximum group size?
Maximum 20 people per departure. This is a smaller-group experience by design — a large group in the lagoon creates too much light disturbance and reduces the plankton effect.
What should I wear?
Wear clothes you don’t mind getting wet or splashed. Bring a light jacket or layer — it gets cool on the water after sunset, especially from September onwards. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with straps are recommended for boarding the kayak.
Can I photograph the plankton?
Yes, but standard phone cameras struggle in low light. A phone with a dedicated night mode (iPhone Night Mode, Google Pixel Night Sight, or equivalent) will capture partial results. Dedicated camera users should bring a wide-angle lens and tripod. The experience is genuinely better in person than in photos — don’t spend the whole time trying to capture it.
What happens if the plankton is not visible on the night?
Cat Ba Local does not cancel the tour purely for low plankton visibility — the sunset cruise, dinner, and kayaking experience stand on their own. However, if you book and conditions are known to be poor, the team will contact you in advance to discuss options including rescheduling.
